Testing, Demonstration and Promotion

SMARTFISH H2020 aims to develop technology for use in all European seas. The testing, demonstration and promotion activities are organised into five work packages (WP6–10), each targeting a different sea area.

Each of the SMARTFISH H2020 systems will be tested in at least one regional WP and within appropriate commercial fisheries and systems. Inclusion of fishing companies and fishing vessel project partners in WP6–10 is a critical component of SMARTFISH H2020 as this will ensure that suitable platforms for testing are available and that the generated results are representative.

Work Packages

Work Package Leader: Einar Roger Pettersen, Melbu Systems
Partners: Melbu Systems, SINTEF Ocean, Nergård Havfiske
Duration: January 2020 – December 2021


The objective is to test and demonstrate the SeinePrecog, CatchScanner and FishData technologies to evaluate their suitability and feasibility for use in Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea fisheries, and to promote their uptake by the regional fishing sector. Targeted fisheries include purse seining (mainly mackerel and herring), whitefish trawling and shrimp trawling.

Duration: January 2020 – December 2021


The objective is to test and demonstrate the SeinePrecog and CatchSnap technologies to evaluate their suitability and feasibility for use in Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea fisheries, and to promote their uptake by the regional fishing sector. Targeted fisheries include purse seining (primarily anchovy and sardine) and demersal trawling.

Duration: January 2019 – December 2021


The objective is to test and demonstrate the NephropsScan, SmartGear, CatchScanner and CatchSnap technologies to evaluate their suitability and feasibility for use in fisheries west of Scotland and in the northern North Sea, and to promote their uptake by the regional fishing sector. Targeted fisheries include nephrops, demersal fish and scallops.

Duration: July 2018 – December 2021


The objective is to test and demonstrate the SeinePrecog, SmartGear, CatchSnap, CatchMonitor and FishData technologies to evaluate their suitability and feasibility for use in southern North Sea, Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay fisheries, and to promote their uptake by the regional fishing sector. Targeted fisheries include mixed-species trawling and purse seining.

Duration: January 2019 – December 2021


The objective is to test and demonstrate the FishFinder, TrawlMonitor, SmartGear, CatchSnap and NephropsScan technologies to evaluate their suitability and feasibility for use in Kattegat and Skagerrak fisheries, and to promote their uptake by the regional fishing sector. Targeted fisheries include demersal trawling for fish and nephrops.
